I love marshland and reflections. And this view (the same perch as my last painting) never disappointed. It changed continuously over the two winter months we stayed near Ocean City, Maryland.
As usual, I started with thin layers of color. Blocking in the marsh, clouds and orange sunset light.
And then it is just the patient layering of color and shadows. There were many times I thought of giving up on it. Then all of a sudden, it came together.
I’m not sure on this little painting if it is the reflected honey colored clouds or the detail in the bunches of marsh grass that drew me to the subject. But it was definitely the slash of sunset orange that sealed the deal. Abstractions in nature are magnetic to a painter.
